Boost Your Metabolism
If you want to lose weight it can be tempting to vastly cut your calorie intake – cabbage soup diet anyone? Yeah, I don’t fancy it either. So a great alternative way to approach weight loss is to boost your metabolism.
It is a great way to squeeze an effective workout into a short space of time. HIIT means working out as hard as you can for a short period, followed by a short rest period, then repeat. So that could be a 30 second sprint, followed by a 30 second rest, repeated for say 20 minutes. Or it could be a combination of exercises burpees, sprints, press ups, squats, whatever combination works for you. Choose your exercises and timings and go for it as hard as you can. The great thing about HIIT is that even after you’ve finished your workout, your metabolism is already boosted so you’ll carry on burning more calories than you normally would.
Lack of sleep alters glucose metabolism and increased ghrelin levels. Ghrelin is released from the stomach to make you feel hunger, so basically, lack of sleep makes you feel hungrier. Apologies to any parents of very young sleepless kids, I personally am choosing to ignore this section until they're a little older 😉
I always advocate being well hydrated. For metabolism purposes, research has shown that drinking chilled water can raise your resting metabolism.
Think breakfast, think lunch, think like a boy scout – be prepared. I’m not going to tell you the old adage that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I am going to tell you that eating good quality meals throughout the day is important, and quality snacks. Eat some protein or some slow release carbs like oats for breakfast to keep you going all morning. Don’t run out the door with good intentions to eat healthily later, you’re far more likely to grab the first muffin you see in the coffee shop.
More boy scout preparation now. Do you know your morning is hour after hour of meetings? Bring a snack, a banana is a great easy snack to squeeze in. If you get too hungry you’ll reach for the biscuits in those meetings. And what happens when we have one sugary snack? We want another sugary snack – it’s a downward, sugar covered spiral.
Capsaicin can increase your metabolism and increase satiety i.e. makes you feel fuller. So add in some chilli or cayenne pepper for a metabolism, and taste, boost.
